Curriculum Highlights:
*Writing/Word Work (Spelling)—Writing workshop has been launched! Students will write daily during this time to improve writing skills. Proper pencil grip is also a focus! To help us practice reading and writing letters we are focusing on our names with the help of our featured Trojan of the week! This child brings a poster all about him/her and a bag with show and tell items! Many literacy skills are practiced during this time such as: letter identification, letter sounds, initial consonant, rhyming, syllable counting, and counting how many letters are in our names!
*Math—We have been practicing using “math tools”. These are manipulatives we will use all year for various math centers and activities such as pattern blocks, snap cubes, peg boards, and attribute blocks.  Counting to 20 and recognizing numbers 0-20 are skills we have begun practicing. This month we will continue these skills along with one to one correspondence and identifying sets to 20.
*Reading— Reading workshop has also been launched! Students will answer questions in response to the stories we read, begin to recognize parts of a book, and build reading fluency.

Class expectations:
We have been busy learning and practicing routines and expectations in our classroom, school building, and playground. Learning to get along and solve conflicts in a respectful way is key to a successful Kindergarten year! Listening and following directions are very important as well.
Our team has earned Trojan tickets for following the 3 R’s: Being Resourceful, Responsible, and Respectful! So far we have 2 stars on our necklace!

Homework:
*Please help your child practice shoe tying.
*Work on letter recognition, number recognition, and writing their name.
*Sight word cards:
This month I will be sending home sight word flash cards for each child.  They are to be kept in your child’s backpack when you are not working on them.  Go through the cards that are NOT in a rubber band.  Flip through them quickly giving your child only a few seconds to say it.  If they don’t say it, say it for them and move on.  Then you can go back through and review them.  Do this three or four times a week.  I will be working on them at school as well and when your child has mastered a word, I will remove it from the ring and add new ones from the rubber band.

*Family Craft:
Be on the lookout for a paper "doll" to decorate like your child. You can embellish the "doll" any way you want! Sequins, stickers, glitter, yarn, google eyes, and material for clothes can be glued on it! Please return these promply so they can be displayed!
