Curriculum Highlights:
* Word Work (Spelling) In Fundations this month, we will start a new unit! We will continue to: blend and read more three-sound words; segment or pull apart sounds in a word; spell three sound words; and learn more high frequency words for reading! We will also: learn how to read and spell words with consonant diagraphs (sh, ch, wh, th); and use phrasing to read sentences fluently.
I will be assessing end of the year reading levels soon. Practicing sight word flash cards at home will benefit your child greatly! If your child doesn’t know a word, say it for them and move on.
*Writing We will continue learning how to express our opinions in writing workshop. As we get closer to Earth day, students will pick environmental problems they would like to try to “solve” by writing about the problem and giving their opinion on how the problem can be solved by providing reasons to their readers.  Writing words and drawing pictures that provide information, along with writing conventions (using capitals at the beginning of sentences, spaces between words, and an ending mark at the end) will continue to be a focus. A great way for your child to work on their reading and writing at the same time is by starting a book journal. After reading a story, have them write a few sentences about their book!
*Reading— We will investigate how readers can get more out of their reading by: frequently checking their understanding of the text and creating mental images of what they read to improve their understanding. We will then start examining and evaluating the characters in our stories; evaluating nonfiction stories; and distinguishing between fantasy and reality!.
Please read 20 minutes DAILY with your child and ask questions about the story to see how well they understood the book! Log on to RAZ kids at http://www.raz-kids.com/login
*Math— We will continue our study of Measurement and Data. Students will demonstrate competence describing and comparing measurable attributes of objects, and develop competence classifying objects and counting the number of objects in each category.  Regularly have your child write numbers 0-20; identify the numbers in the teens (11,12,13,….19) ; and count to 100 by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s! These are important math skills I will continue to assess.
