Curriculum Highlights:
* Word
Work (Spelling)— We
finished learning the remaining letters last month! For the next unit in Fundations, we will
learn: letter formation of capital letters, letter sequence (ABC order), story
prediction, and reading short vowel words (3 sounds). Please regularly check
that your child can name all letters and their letter sounds!
*Writing— We will begin a
new writing unit on All About books but this time students will gather information
by researching their topic and write to teach others about a topic they have
learned a lot about. We will also continue to focus on writing conventions
(using capitals at the beginning of sentences, spaces between words, and an
ending mark at the end) and stretching
out words (like a rubber band) to help them write words. Please continue
helping your child practice saying words slowly, listening to each part of the
words, and write the letters that they hear!
*Math—We are finishing
up our math unit on Operations and Algebraic Thinking. Adding, subtracting, and
decomposing numbers have been our math skills we have focused on in this
unit. Please check to see if your
child can identify and write numbers 0-20. Practice counting to 100 by 1’s,
5’s, and 10’s!
*Reading— We will read
various stories to help us investigate how we can use our background knowledge
and thinking with new learning. We will dive in more to: Understand Story
Grammar/Elements such as a main character, setting and a plot that involves resolving
a problem; Identify & Understand Literary Devices such as text and
picture clues; and Identify & Use Text Features such as speech
bubbles, story charts, and end papers in books. Please read 20 minutes daily with your child and ask questions about
the story to see how well they understood the book!

Class expectation:
This month we
will:
Review school-wide
expectations; Discuss how to use manners by responding appropriately when
others speak to us; Discuss how to be friends to others that are different; and
Discuss how to treat others the way we want to be treated. Thank you for
your reinforcement of these behaviors!
**************************************************
Homework:
*Help your
child log on to RAZ kids at http://www.raz-kids.com/login for a fun
way to have them read for 20 minutes!
*Please read above for some ideas of
activities you can do with your child at home for extra practice.
*Sight word flash cards: Please keep these at home and read over the
cards DAILY! If your child doesn’t know the word, say it for them and move on.
*Family Craft: Be on the lookout for our January
Family craft! This month you will get a blue and white piece of construction
paper. Use the white paper to make a snowman and glue it on the blue
construction paper as the background! You can then decorate your snowman any
way you want! Sequins, stickers, glitter, and any other kind of material can be
glued on it! Please return these promply so they can be displayed!
