Curriculum Highlights:
* Word Work (Spelling) This month, we will continue to: learn how to blend and read three-sound words; and work on retelling stories! We will begin to: listen for the vowel sound in words and distinguish between the long & short vowel sound; and introduce high frequency words for reading!
Please have your child continue to read sight word flash cards at home. If your child doesn’t know the word, say it for them and move on.
*Writing We will begin a new writing unit on Narratives! Our primary goal will be for students to learn how to write a narrative about a single event or several events from their lives. While writing their “A time When “ stories, students will also continue to focus on writing conventions (using capitals at the beginning of sentences, spaces between words, and an ending mark at the end) and  stretching out words (like a rubber band) to help them write words.
Providing authentic opportunities for your child to write would be a great way to practice writing at home. (ex. Helping write the grocery list, family to do list, a personal diary or daily journal)
*Math—This month we will start our math unit called Number and Operations in Base 10. Making sense of problems and solving them, reason abstractly & quantitatively, and composing/decomposing numbers from 11-19 into 10’s and 1’s are some math skills we will focus on in this unit.  Please check to see if your child can identify and write numbers 0-20. The numbers in the teens (11,12,13,….19) are still very tricky for some of our kids. Continue counting to 100 by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s!
*Reading— We will read stories this month that will help us investigate how we can use images and words to gain understanding and ask questions when we read, listen, and view images. We will continue to: discuss the difference between nonfiction or fiction stories; and discuss story grammar/elements such as a main character, setting and a plot that involves resolving a problem.
Please read 20 minutes DAILY with your child and ask questions about the story to see how well they understood the book! A fun way to have them read is to log on to RAZ kids at http://www.raz-kids.com/login
