Curriculum Highlights:
* Word Work (Spelling) In Fundations this month, we will continue to: learn how to blend and read three-sound words; work on retelling stories; listen for the vowel sound in words and distinguish between the long & short vowel sound; and introduce more high frequency words for reading!
I hope you are continuing to read sight word flash cards at home. If your child doesn’t know the word, say it for them and move on.
*Reading— We will read stories this month that will help us investigate how we wonder about new information; how to use questions as tools for our learning; and how we can read with a question in our minds. Please read 20 minutes DAILY with your child and ask questions about the story to see how well they understood the book! Log on to RAZ kids at http://www.raz-kids.com/login
*Writing We will start learning how to express our opinions in writing workshop. Students will learn to take a stand on topics according to their opinions and tackle classroom problems! Writing words and drawing pictures that provide information, along with writing conventions (using capitals at the beginning of sentences, spaces between words, and an ending mark at the end) will continue to be a focus. Writing at home in fun and authentic ways would be a great way to practice these writing skills at home.
*Math—This month we will finish our math unit called Number and Operations in Base 10. Making sense of problems and solving them, reason abstractly & quantitatively, and composing/decomposing numbers from 11-19 into 10’s and 1’s are some math skills we have been focusing on in this unit.  We will also start a new math unit towards the end of the month called Measurement and Data! Regularly asking your child to count/write numbers 0-20; identify the numbers in the teens (11,12,13,….19) ; and counting to 100 by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s would be a good way to see if your child is retaining what they are learning in class!

Class expectation:
This month we will continue to:
Discuss how important it is to be honest with others. It is the character trait we focused on in the month of February! Thank you for your reinforcement of appropriate behaviors! I really appreciate all you do!
