Curriculum Highlights:
* Word
Work (Spelling)— In
Fundations this month, we will start our final unit! We will continue to
practice reading sentences in phrases and practice writing a sentence with
proper capitalization and punctuation! We will also: review the different
features in stories that are real and stories that are make-believe.
Practicing sight word flash cards are still very
important in building your child’s sight words knowledge.
*Writing— Our writing
workshop time is starting to “look” a little different now. Our writing time
will consist of doing various writing activities (both open ended and
facilitated) to fine tune the writing skills we have learned to do this year in
Kindergarten. Students will focus on: handwriting, writing conventions
(capitalization, spaces, and punctuation), and writing with more detail. I
hope you have found a fun way to get your child to write at home!
*Reading— We will
recognize the difference between realism and fantasy. Students will respond to
fantasy stories by making connections to real-life people, events, and details.
We will then start engaging ourselves in the stories we read in a variety of
ways, such as “talking” to the characters and the author and thinking about the
story in a new way! Please read daily for 20 minutes with your child to
build their reading fluency!
*Math— We are in our last math unit of Geometry. Students will
demonstrate competence identifying and describing shapes; and develop
competence analyzing, comparing, creating, and composing shapes. I
am in the middle of assessing end of the year math skills such as counting by
1’s, 2’s, 5, and 10’s; and adding and subtracting. These are important skills to practice at
home!

Class expectation:
We are reviewing school expectations daily. Being respectful, responsible, and
resourceful when problems arise is our main focus. Please continue to have
similar conversations with your child. Thank you for your reinforcement of
appropriate behaviors! I really appreciate all you do!

Homework:
*Please read above for some ideas of
activities you can do with your child at home for extra practice.
*Family Craft: This month you will get a graduation
project to help your child complete! I will send home a paper plate and a
graduation hat! Please use the plate for your child’s face! Attach the
graduation hat on his/her head! Please return these promptly so they can be
displayed!
