Curriculum Highlights:
* Word Work
(Spelling)—In August, we started a phonics/handwriting program. The focus
was on getting the kids familiar with materials and procedures that we will use
daily (30 minutes). Each week new letters
will be introduced. So far letters t, b,
f, m, and n have been covered! Please review these letters for extra
practice!
*Writing—We have been busy in
writing workshop improving our illustrations. Students
are learning: how to write independently; that their illustrations help readers
understand their stories; that writers use pictures and words to write; and how
to turn & talk with friends to help plan their books! This month we will focus on stretching out words (like a rubber band) to help them write. Please
help your child practice saying words slowly, listening to each part of the
words, and write the letters that they hear!
*Math—This month we will continue
working on counting to 20, recognizing numbers 0-20, one to one correspondence,
and identifying/counting sets to 20. Please help your child practice writing
numbers 0-20. Go higher if your child is ready to go further!
*Reading—We are continuing to
learn about the habits of good readers. We have discussed how important it is
to think when we read a story. It will help us with our comprehension. Please
read daily with your child and ask questions about the story to see how well
they understood the book!

Class
expectation:
We are
continuing to review classroom expectations in our classroom, school building,
and playground. Respect is what most of our conversations are about. For
example, respecting others personal space by keeping our hands and feet to
ourselves. Rough playing (pushing, hitting) is also occurring. Please
continue this conversation at home.

Homework:
*Please
read above for some ideas of activities you can do with your child at home for
extra practice.
*Sight
word flash cards:
Flash cards were sent home! Please keep these in your child’s backpack and read
over the cards that are NOT in the rubberband DAILY! If your child doesn’t know
the word, say it for them and move on. I will do the same at school. Once your
child has mastered a word, I will remove it from the ring and add new words
from the rubber band.
*Family
Craft: A black piece of construction paper and an orange piece with a
pumpkin drawn were sent home! You can cut out the pumpkin, glue it to the black
piece of paper, and decorate the pumpkin any way you want! Sequins, stickers,
glitter, yarn, google eyes, and any other kind of material can be glued on it!
Please return these promply so they can be displayed!
