Curriculum Highlights:
* Word Work (Spelling)— Each week new letters are introduced!. So far we have learned the letters a,b,c,d,f,g,i,m,n,o,s,t,u!  Please check to see if your child knows these letters, the correct letter formation and their sounds. The more practice the better!
*Writing—We have finished our writing unit on illustrations! This month we will begin a new writing unit on All About books that will help us write our own Non-fiction books! We will also begin to focus on writing conventions such as: using capitals at the beginning of our sentences, spaces between words, and an ending mark at the end! We are still working on stretching out words (like a rubber band) to help us write. Please help your child practice saying words slowly, listening to each part of the words, and write the letters that they hear!
*Math—This month we will begin a new math unit on Operations and Algebraic Thinking. Adding, subtracting, and decomposing numbers are new math skills we will cover in this unit.  Please help your child practice identifying and writing numbers 0-20. See how high they can count also. Remember counting to 100 is our end of the year goal!
*Reading— Last month we started investigating visual and text features of non-fiction books such as: illustrations, photographs, diagrams, maps, captions, and labels. We have learned that non-fiction books are books that have been written to teach us something! This month we will continue looking at non-fiction books to help us write our own All About books! Please read 20 minutes daily with your child and ask questions about the story to see how well they understood the book!

Class expectation:
We are talking about being responsible a lot in class. Responsibility is when we remember to take care of our things. For example, remembering to brush our teeth, bringing backpacks, folders, flashcards, and library books to school everyday. Please continue this conversation at home to help your child see the value of being responsible.

Homework:
*Please read above for some ideas of activities you can do with your child at home for extra practice.
*Sight word flash cards: Please keep these in your child’s backpack and read over the cards that are NOT in the rubberband DAILY! If your child doesn’t know the word, say it for them and move on.
*Family Craft: A brown piece of construction paper that is cut in the shape of a feather was sent home! You can decorate the feather any way you want! Sequins, stickers, glitter, yarn, noodles, and any other kind of material can be glued on it! We will make a big class turkey using all our feathers! Please return these promply so they can be displayed!
